spring dreams

Spring Dreams

I have been dreaming of Spring all week. The dreary Winter skies are beginning to get to me. I want to see the crocus poke up out of the ground. I want to see the pussy willows appearing on bare branches. I want Spring.

And so, when a co-worker recieved tulips from her daughter, I grabbed my camera and shot a few frames. I am hoping the gorgeous colors will tide me over for a few more weeks.  Maybe I am an optimist?

patience please

Rain and Bus

To be honest, the posts this week have been…. well, they have been a little weak. Due to a combination of bad weather and a cluster of particularly nasty migraine head aches, I have hardly even lifted my camera since Saturday morning. My typical day has consisted of going to work, coming home and going to bed. Hopefully the weather and the pain will clear by the weekend.

I do have an interesting idea for a weekend shoot. We just finished building and decorating a new laundry room. I am planning a photo shoot of the new area. Think of it as a mock interior fashion shoot. Bright colors, plenty of good light, and lots of decorating by Jodi. All of these should combine to create a nice subject. We might even get a new Jodi-ism out of the experience.

I also want to visit the cormorants I found in the fall and see how they are doing. I have a new 70-210mm f2.8 and a 1.4x extension tube that I would like to try on them.

I hope you have interesting plans for your weekend.

is it bon eye-ver or bon eee-vehr?

I haven't a clue as to how you pronounce the name of the band Bon Iver. As the official "Last person on earth to have ever listened the band", I hope you will forgive me for previously thinking that Bon Iver was another Justin Bieber like Canadian tweener act.

I will now move to the un-cool kids table for my two weeks of banishment.

After listening to this song, Holocene, I am going to go and troll iTunes for more.

do you recognize this woman?

Deb

If you were to sift through all of my photographs of people, taken over the last two years, two women would stand out more than any other people. The first would be my wife, Jodi. I have hundreds of photographs of Jodi in her dance costumes. The second most photographed person would be my friend Deb.

Among the many hats that Deb wears is that of professional musician. In that role, she asked me to create a head shot for her. She has an upcoming concert and needed a photo in a hurry. While editing the head shot, I suddenly realized that this image is completely out of context for the way you would normally see me shoot Deb. As a matter of fact, many of my longtime readers refer to her by a completely fictitious name; Jeanne Clausen.

Here are a few of Deb's more memorable portaits.

Don't see Deb in that last image? Look on stage, Deb is playing classical guitar. You would be surprised at all of the talents she has. Here is an incomplete list of the many hats that Deb wears:

Historian

Musician (That I know of; recorder, flute, lute, guitar, & mandolin)

Spinner and weaver

Needle worker & seamstress (Deb made all of the costumes she wears in all of these period images)

Gourmet cook

Chicken herder & lady farmer (Sheep, horses, chickens… you name the farm animal)

House mistress (I use this term in its historic sense)

I think it is fair to say that Deb is a good example of a modern renaissance woman.

20 years – the civil wars

Source: youtube.com via Tim on Pinterest

I've been listening to The Civil Wars a lot lately. It was almost a year ago that I took my mother (Sweet MaMa) to go see them at a little club in Athens, Georgia. Standing room only, but we didn't care. They were incredible on stage. The simplicity of John Paul's guitar paired with both of their voices in perfect harmony.

I have to wonder though, if Joy WIlliams could sing if her arms were tied to her side.
