lunch on the farm

Preparations in Progress

When I arrived at the farm on Saturday, Debbie was just finishing preparations for lunch. I caught her in the kitchen window, peeling and slicing onions.

Potatoes and Onions

The hands needed a hearty lunch and Debbie was cooking up a great big skillet of fried potatoes and onions.

Making Lunch

The wood stove was plenty hot and the skillet saw constant motion to keep everything from burning.

Scrambled eggs

When the potatoes and onions were just about finished, Debbie scrambled up some eggs and added them to the skillet. In the oven they went until the hands arrived for lunch.

Brandied Cherries

The meal also included pickled beets, pickled green beans, corn relish, and for desert, brandied cherries. When the men went back to work, there wasn't a whole lot left to put away. The table looked like locusts had had there way with the meal.

I am not a fan of country music as a rule. As with all rules, there are some exceptions. I do like to hear Dwight Yokum sing about white cadillacs, I love a good fiddle, and I absolutely adore the song Jolene.

I must have more than a dozen versions of the song on my iPad, sung by just as many artists. Dolly really knew what she was doing when she wrote the song.

Today, I bring you a version by the emerging Canadian band named Belle Starr. I came across their version of Jolene by complete accident. I am a huge fan of the band Great Lake Swimmers and fiddle player and singer Miranda Mulholland is a member of both groups. All I can say is that the woman must not have much time off.

Enjoy folks, and have a great Sunday. Here is to breaking the rules.

saturated barn

Morning Windmill

Saturday morning, I visited the barn just as the sun began to peek above the tree line. I could follow the sun's progress as it first touched the windmill and then the roof of the barn.

Sunrise Barn

Before long, the entire side of the barn was engulfed in light. The sun brought the red barn to life and it's paint seemed to glow in the saturated light.

It's moments like these and light like this that makes my habit of waking early, an enjoyable one.

in the morning, I dreamed…

In the Morning, I Dreamed

I love that second sleep. You know the one. It's early Sunday morning and you wake up for a few minutes, but you soon fall asleep again. Just for an hour or so. During that second sleep, your dreams seem more vivid, more real.

When you wake up, the dreams seem easier to remember and you can lay in bed for a few minutes with your eyes closed, soaking in the lusciousness that is half asleep, half awake.

Yes, I love second sleep.
