The world is out there for you to discover on your own. There are wolves, yes, but there are also pastures full of spring grass and the chance that you will find a flock of your own.

It is your life and I can’t walk beside you. Think of what you’ve learned. Be careful, but do not forget to live. Be strong and be kind. Don’t be afraid to lose your heart.

I will come when you need me. When you need a place to lick your wounds and rest, you are welcome home. But it is time and you must go. 

Please go now, before I lose my courage.

New Year’s Eve Ball

Once again, I spent New Year’s Eve at the ball in South Charleston, OH. Once again I struggled to focus and capture motion in the dim light. And, once again, I had a wonderful time.

New this year, I managed to stay up til after midnight and toasted 2017 with champagne. Though dancing took it’s toll on some, everyone was up at the stroke of twelve to dance some more.

Fire in the Smokies

I spent the week before Thanksgiving in Georgia, visiting family. I got up early on Monday and headed for my parents home. From London Kentucky on south, I drove through the smoke and haze created by the numerous forest fires raging though the Smokies. An hour away from my destination, I stopped in Tallulah to see the gorge. This is the deepest gorge east of the Mississippi River and one of my favorite stops. My sister, Kelly lives just across the road, tucked up in the lee of a mountain.

As you can see, the smoke settled into the gorge, filling it with a burnt haze. The smell of it filled the air. And while, I normally enjoy the scent of a wood fire, I ‘d been sitting in the smell for hours and was done with it.

This scene was captured atop Black Rock Mountain just a few minutes before I arrived at Tallulah Gorge. You can see that the view is completely filled with the smoke of the fires burning near Tiger, GA.

The Smoky Mountains were definitely living up to their moniker.

 

Light is Wonderful

There are times when the quality of light is a pure joy to me. On a recent visit to the farm, the sun and clouds combined in a way that seemed to defy the overcast sky.

Here is a second example. The scenery behind Jason and Charley almost looks as though it’s been painted on canvas. To me, the light feels surreal.

A Nice Surprise at CAC

I recently visited the Contemporary Arts Center (CAC) located in downtown Cincinnati to see a disappointing photo exhibition (part of the biannual Foto Focus event.) While the photos were not that interesting, I was wonderfully surprised to see an exhibition of Glenn Brown’s paintings. His swirling and flowing brush strokes were matched by brilliant colors to wonderful effect.

If you are near Cinci, go see Brown’s exhibition at CAC, his artwork will be there through January 15th, 2017. While you are there, slip across the street to the Weston Gallery to see their wonderful Foto Focus exhibition.

And yes, for those of you who read this blog regularly, that is my friend Jim’s bald spot proudly on display.

 

 

 

This week, I saw this…

Sometimes you can see something in a way that is like seeing it for the first time. This is a glass installation hanging in the lobby of CMoA, the Columbus Museum of Art in Columbus, Ohio. I’ve created images of it before, but this time I saw something completely different in the work. What led to this new appreciation of the forms? I looked up.
