portraits and color

Joe Purple

Today, I'd like to talk about how similar and opposing colors affect portraits by taking a look at two identical portraits whose only difference is the color of the subjects shirt. This image is a fairly straightforward traditional portrait, perfect for what we want to look at.

Whenever we want the object in our images to stand out from their backgrounds, we need to see a contrast between what we want our audience to focus on and what we don't. Often this contrast takes the form of opposing lighting, texture and pattern. Here, we are looking at contrasting colors. In the original image, the man in the photograph is wearing a purple plaid shirt. Unfortunately purple is very close to red on the color wheel. The similarities in the two colors makes it difficult for our eye to settle in one place. We intuitively want to look at the face but, the purple is trying to draw our eyes to the shirt as well. When our eyes don't know where to go, we lose much of the impact that we could get from the portrait.

Joe Green

In the second image, I have replaced the purple with green. Green is on the opposite side of the color wheel from the red hue that is prevalent in the face and provides a nice contrast. We refer to their relationship as being complementary. Red and green are complementary, purple and yellow are complementary as well as blue and orange.

However, I didn't stop at changing the Hue to green. I also desaturated the green and reduced it's brightness or luminosity to add further contrast with the subject's face. Now, our eyes are drawn very strongly to the face and don't even want to move to the shirt. Color is made up of three distinctive qualities (Hue, Saturation and Luminosity) and we have changed all three of them to maximize the difference in color.

Betty 2

Let's take a look at a second example. In this image of my cat, Betty, The over riding colors are the purple int he wall and the green in her eyes. Another color is the small bit of blue in her collar. Purple and green are complementary colors so, on the surface they look to be ok. The immediate problem is the blue. Blue clashes with both the purple and the green.

Betty 1

Eliminating the blue is pretty easy. I didn't want another patch of color, so I simple desaturated the blue until it turned to grey. Now the buckle simply disappears in to the muted colors of her fur.

With the blue eliminated, I decided that I wanted to place more emphasis on Betty's eyes. Remember the three components of color? Hues, Saturation, and Luminosity? I didn't want to change the hue, the green is her natural color and wasn't a problem in the presence of the purple. I thought the eyes had plenty of brightness so, I decided not to fuddle with the luminosity. That left saturation. By bumping up the saturation of the green, I was able to give more strength to her eyes. Now, without a doubt, you are instantly drawn to her eyes.

master artistry

Tool Chest

Every time I get to know somebody that has truly mastered their art, I am in awe. Such is the case with my friend Rob. Even the most utilitarian pieces that he makes are beautiful and elegant. Just look at Rob's tool box. He made this chest so that he could carry some of his tools to the farm with him.

What kind of artists and artisans do you know? Have any of them mastered their art form? I'd be interested to hear from you about the super talented people in your life.

persistant inspiration

inspired experimentation

Sometimes I just can't get an image out of my mind until I've had a go at it myself. In this case, I was inspired by more than one image. Recently two of my photo buddies have featured images of daisies that were so well done that the shots have been stuck in my head.

The first source if inspiration came from Susan Downing in the form of a daisy shot from a really unusual angle. You can see her inspiring daisy here on flickr.

The second source of inspiration came from Wendy Erlendson. You can find her wonderful daisy image here on flickr.

Combined these two images placed daisies solidly into my head and I couldn't get them out. Luckily, we have some daisies in our flower beds and I didn't have to go far to find my subject. Like Susan, I wanted to do something unusual and I decided to try and blow out a flower that was already white. Even more I wanted to do it in camera, without any post processing.

This image is the result. What do you think about the image? Does it do anything for you? Did the experiment result in anything worth keeping or is this just another blown out image? Let me know what you think.

last day

Sister

Meet my sister, Kelly.

Brother In Law

And her husband, Bill. Notice that they are both wearing their best hiking gear… not! While both wore shorts, they also wore their dress shirts. Bill had his pen, glasses and case placed neatly in his shirt pocket. I don't think that Bill owns a single T-shirt. If I told you that Bill was a math teacher at a private school, would you be surprised?

I spent my last full day and night at their house in the North Georgia mountains. We had a really wonderful day of hiking and eating followed by some visiting with each other and finally, we capped the day off by going to bed early at 7:30. This seems to be very typical of my visits with them. We have a fantastic day, wear ourselves out and go to bed before the sun.

Georgia Mountains

We started off by driving further into the mountains between Georgia and North Carolina. The day was relatively clear for a hot summer day and we could see for miles. The entire vista was uninterrupted nature. Mountains and forests without a sign of human habitation in site.

Trees and Rocks

Once we were well into the mountains and near Highlands North Carolina, we stopped and went for a long hike at Glenn's Falls. The hike started through the forrest of tall pines, scrubby wild rhododendron and mountain laurel.

Sister and Falls

Eventually we found the falls. Three in all. They were wonderful to see and gave off a welcome cool mist. All told, we probably hiked two miles, all up and down hill. While Bill and I had appropriate hiking shoes, Kelly finished the entire trip wearing only a pair of beaded and bejeweled flip flops. Kelly kept asking how much further and Bill would only answer, just a little farther. Together they make a really warm couple to be around. They tease each other non stop and like to hold hands while they are walking.

Dry Falls

On the way home, we stopped at Dry Falls, just a short walk from the highway. Typical of Bill's generosity, he wanted me to see the falls while we were up there. The wet spray coming from the falls resulted in spectacular green foliage and mosses along the trail

If you are ever in Northern Georgia and want to know of some local trails, just ask Bill. He might even go with you… just relax, ties are optional.

Sunrise 070311

Ok, I will be the first to admit that I don't know the words to the song. Let's just say this is a close approximation. At the very least we should be able to agree that there was a pretty dawn with a tree in the Disney movie and that is what this image reminds me of.

In todays post, I will be sharing some images taken with a f4.5 70-210mm lens with a 1.4x tele-convertor attached. This heavy hitter, the tele-convertor and a nifty little f1.7 50mm prime lens were shipped to me in a surprise care package by my Uncle, John Edward Moore (affectionately known as Uncle Eddy by the members of my family though the rest of the world calls him John as far as I can tell).

With any new lens comes a learning curve. How close can I get to my subject? Where is the sweet spot in the focal length? How slow is the lens?

With this lens, I am finding that the sweet spot is really wide, running through most of the focal length. Yes, the lens is a bit slow, especially with the tele-convertor attached. However, I am not a sports photographer and this lens seems to be perfect for what I shoot as well as the way that I shoot. The lens has a lot of glass and is heavy. I can shoot hand held but at slower most speeds, I think that I prefer to use the tripod or a monopod.

Thank you Uncle-E, This is a fine piece of glass and I am looking forward to getting to know it better. What do you folks of the internet think? Do you shoot with a 70x210mm lens? I feel as though it should be a part of every photographer's kit.

and he shall be named terrence

and he shall be named Terrence

Meet my friend Terrence (Terry if you are friend or family). My good companion jumped aboard the hood of my car some place in North Carolina. He and I got along fairly well. Terry is not much for conversation. However, Mr. T did like my choice of music.

Some place in Eastern Tennessee, Terry and I went our separate ways. He spotted a nice little pond and wanted to go hang out with the girl bugs. Ahhh, summer, all the bugs are in love. Me? Oh, I continued my journey home. I had a Pookie Bunny waiting for me.

homeward bound

Contemplation

Today I am making the drive home after more than a week visiting with my family and friends in Georgia. I had a wonderful visit and while I was here, I made the grand tour of Atlanta and my families homes. I thought that for today's post, I would share with you some of the random images that represent what I will be remembering on my way home.

mr. lee’s house

Georgia House

Sitting amongst the modern subdivisions in my parent's semi-rural Georgia town sits Mr. Lee's home. He and his wife have lived there for many years and their house is a reminder of another time. Homes like Mr. Lee's are disappearing all over the south and I will miss them when they are all gone.

As a younger version of me, I can remember seeing more of these homes. I would often see the lady of the house out sweeping the yard and even the occasional flock of chickens. Of course, there were dogs out in the yard and under the porch.

I hope the Lee's have many happy years ahead of them. When the time comes for them to pass, I know their home will go with them. When they are gone, their children will probably sell the land and a huge McMansion will take the place of what I think is a fine home and a reminder of what used to be.

bunnies in love

Bunnies in Love

Beatrice loved Peter with all her heart. He was handsome with his long ears and soft, glistening coat of fur. His bright blue eyes seemed to see into her soul, warming her and lifting her up. Yes, she loved Peter and better yet, she knew that the feeling was mutual. Beatrice remembered when they had woven their hearts together in the Spring daisy celebration, announcing to their families and friends that they had bonded and had committed themselves to only each other for the remainders of their lives.

Now the couple was ready to start their new life as a family in the thicket near the brook. This would be a good home and a happy home. The thicket was secure and surrounded with wild flowers and sweet meadows of grass.

I hope that Beatrice and Peter live long fruitful lives and have lots of children. Just leave Mr. Tom's garden alone!

he’s my brother

My Brother Scott 1

Yes, I claim him. I know it's hard to believe but he is mine. Like all brothers, we have had a friendly rivalry for years. We need to show each other who is the most manly of men. We have categories like most hair, tallest, fattest, etc. We had to give up wrestling when we got older and neither one of us cold get on the floor or get up anymore (he always won so this was in my favor). For the record, I am taller but he has more hair. Our weight goes back and forth all the time so, I'll just call that a tie.

My Brother Scott 2

In reality, he is a pretty impressive human being (if you need a second opinion, he will explain why if you ask him). Let's see… he is part very successful software services sales engineer, part farmer and rancher, part hunter, part husband and father of three, part slum lord, and three parts legend in his own mind. He is smart, fairly good looking (almost as good looking as me), funny, big hearted, a terrifying driver, thoughtful, well spoken and a speak his mind kind of guy. No wonder I look up to him in many ways (though in doing so, I have to physically look down). Just look at the following two images.

Feeding the Geese

Feeding the Geese

The man has pet Canadian Geese! He has a large pond behind his house filled with about 20 geese, turtles, fish, musk rats, and the occasional beaver. Ordinarily this would be no big deal however, MY brother has them trained to come to dinner and hand feeds them! He even got me in on the act (the better looking but hair challenged one is me). We even pet them! Who does that? He is a regular Dr. Doolittle. He even has two pet horses and dogs to go with his geese. He picks up snakes! I run in terror from snakes and spiders, screaming like a little girl.

Boots and Pitch Fork

The man likes to get dirty but wears a good suit like he is a model in GQ (though Dude, you could use an update in your dress shoe style). When he walks into a room, he owns it. You know those beer commercials about the worlds most interesting man? I have always secretly thought they were modeled after my brother.

The real clincher is that he shares all of this with everybody around him. He wanted me to experience feeding the geese. He wanted me to know of the hidden windows at the aquarium (absolutely incredible views with no crowds).

So the next time you hear him telling one of is many incredible tales of his exploits, maybe hunting tigers on the back of his elephant while playing the violin, you will just have to consider for a moment and wonder… wow, did he really do that? I mean, he is a legend and there seems to be a lot of truth behind his wild stories. I have never been able to disprove any of them and have been witness to quite a few.

That's all for now, he just captured an alligator with his bare hands and is going to fry up some gator tail for me. I think we are going to wash it down with some beer he made with the barley he grew in his back yard during his spare time, just before he told the CIA where he had tracked down Bin Laden). Don't believe me? You prove otherwise!

As a final word to all of you out there with great brothers of your own… DREAM ON! This one is all mine! Get your own incredible brother. And you ladies? His wife will tear you to shreds so don't even think about it.
