evening reflections

Reid Park Reflection 2

I have a weakness for good silhouettes and good reflections. Combine them together and I am one happy photographer. In this image, I like the way the colors go from subtle pinks on the left to vivid blues on the right. However, never one to leave good enough alone, I also wondered if the image would make a good black and white. Is this an image about interesting colors or is this an image about light and luminance?

Reid Park Reflection 2a

The good news is that the switch from color to B&W is something that can be done in moments. Better yet, the conversion does not have to be permanent and you can just as easily switch back. When faced by curiosity, let yourself go. Even if you prefer the previous image (as I do here), try it out. You have nothing to loose and you might find that your instincts were right.

gosh, gish!

Gish Mural

L_Gish Springfield, Ohio has a many claims to fame. Home to John Legend, International Harvester, Jonathan Winters, Colliers magazine, and my personal favorite Lillian Gish. She started off in the silent era and her career stretched until just before her death with "The Whales of August"

I always thought that she was a beautiful woman in her youth and a gorgeous human being in her senior years. In her will, she created the Dorothy and Lillian Gish prize, awarding annual prizes to those in the arts.

What I didn't know until recently was that she had a role in the controversial film "Birth of a Nation" at the beginning of her career.

Springfield never ceases to amaze me with its many surprises. Yes, it is a city that has seen better times however, it is also a city with deep and rich roots in manufacturing, history, and the arts.

diner

Mobile Dogs 2

Do you have a favorite local food stop? I do. I absolutely love a local diner named Mobile Dogs. MD is located inside the ground floor of a downtown office building and has been around since the 40s. It's the kind of place where you go in and sit at a small counter on a chrome plated swiveling stool. After about your third visit, they know your name and get your drink ready as soon they see you coming in.

I like to visit in the off hours so that I don't have to fight for a space during the breakfast and lunch rushes. The menu is simple, typical eggs with meat and toast or biscuits and gravy for breakfast, burgers, dogs and sandwiches for lunch. Best of all, they serve a giant fried bologna sandwich. It must be a pound of bologna. I always get mine with fresh onion rings. On a recent visit, I saw a man order and eat a dozen fried eggs and a double order of bacon. He washed the entire meal down with a single glass of Coke. That kind of eating should be an olympic sport.

Mobile Dogs

There is always banter being served on the side by the regulars who seem to rotate in and out all day. Semi toothless old men and overweight women, all of whom have seen better years. People that have survived hard lives and have found a way to enjoy the small victories and simple pleasures.

I think I will go there for lunch tomorrow and order a coney dog with fries and homemade macaroni salad. Hear that low rumble? My stomach is growling already.

the boat house

The Boat House

Here in Springfield, Ohio USA, we have a very nice park that winds along the river. The park is dotted with ponds full of geese and ducks as well as an occasional old victorian building. The boat house is just one example.

This image is an example of how an overcast sky allows you to shoot in the middle of the day, long after the golden hour has passed you by.
